An Overview of SEO

What is it?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an Internet Marketing strategy that helps to improve the ranking and visibility of a website or web page in search engines via natural search results (unpaid). SEO is the processing of increasing a website’s ranking by having the search results appear higher up on the page. In general, the higher up the result, the more views the website or page will receive.

How it works

Search Engine Optimization considers how search engines work, and also what people search for when they are looking for something specific. In order to optimize websites, certain elements including HTML, hyperlinks etc. may need to be edited, and other content optimized which will make web crawling by search engines more efficient at finding information on the website and indexing it. Other tactics include increasing the number of backlinks or inbound links (links to your site from elsewhere on the web) to a website.

How does it help you?

Search Engine Optimization is a strategy that doesn’t show a visible short term benefit, but will provide greater gain over the long term. SEO techniques can be used to make a page more prominent to crawlers which will result in it being more likely to get indexed. Additionally, if there is a page or certain information that an individual or a company does not want indexed, there are methods available to prevent crawlers from detecting them. The usual outcomes of optimizing a website can include higher revenues, higher search ranking and more traffic. The overall long term benefits can include an increased brand value, constant marketing, and more targeted traffic.
