What is Online Reputation Management?

Online Reputation Management is the process of securing ones reputation as it appears in various forms on the internet. Securing one’s reputation online is not about merely tracking down and wiping out any negative mumblings that might be associated with a brand, though that may be part of it. Securing one’s online reputation is giving others the opportunity to easily find your space online and to make that space the best source of information about you.

Today’s vast amounts of information can make this feat a tricky task. In order to have a professional and effective web presence there are three basic core functionalities that fulfill the overarching term of Online Reputation Management. They are as follows:

1. Web Development – Creating your space online involves securing a unique domain name (preferably your name or a derivative), setting it up with a reliable hosting provider, and building out a clean-cut and professional looking site. A good web design will be easily followed and will be designed with user content in mind.
2. Search Engine Optimization – Optimizing this website so that it can be quickly and easily found online is another task all in itself. With the immergence of search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing it is imperative that your site is indexed and ranked well by these sites. To do this requires unique skills and knowledge in how each search engine works in order to customize your site to be found online.
3. Social Media – Recently, Facebook passed Google as the most visited site in the US. There is no denying that social media is making a large impact in how connections are formed and how relationships are made. Being in the conversation about you and your product/service offerings is critical to securing new and retaining old business.

Using these three tools in conjunction with a planned online strategy can lead to great results. When used effectively, you can begin to manage how others see you online and give them a go-to source of information on you and your firm. After all, where else would you want your customers to come to for your information but to you?

Securing your reputation online legitimizes your business, increases its visibility, and creates awareness of consumer concern that may not have been fully realized before. This customer-focused strategy is sure to help any company gain and secure customers while engaging them in more ways thus helping to build a stronger trust and greater relationship between the two.

The most effective advertising is the kind that your target market will see. If you are targeting a younger audience, facebook can be fairly effective. If you want an older and often more sophisticated audience, twitter could prove to be a good online tool when used consistently. If you are targeting a geographic region, make sure that your site is optimized for keywords in that region and consider initiating a PPC campaign with Google and the likes. It is most important to be where your customers are. Think vertically, and look for places to integrate your services or offer value to those upstream and downstream. Comment on their blogs, form alliances, and follow those who might be of interest. Much business is relationship-based, so look for opportunities to create, build, and maintain relationships and carry that through online.
